Some of you may have looked at the photography on the home page or elsewhere on the site and wondered, ‘What kind of boat is that?’, or ‘I wonder why they chose that boat’. Well, for those of you are wondering today we’ll be talking a little bit about our Maui Zodiac tour boats: why we use them, why they are great at what they do, and what you can expect when you’re out on one.
First a little bit of history: modern inflatable boats were developed during and after World War II. Rubberized fabrics had advanced a great deal and many companies and governments started developing inflatable boats for transportation and as safety equipment. The Zodiac company in France perfected the design of small and medium sized inflatable boats and after the war started selling them to individuals and companies. With the advent of the outboard motor, the once-slow inflatable boats gained speed and popularity.
Jump ahead fifty years, and we can tell you a bit about our top of the line Zodiac boats, and why they are so great for our Maui snorkeling and whale watching tours. New fabrics and technologies mean that boat manufacturers can create a light, fast and safe inflatable boat, with many of the same features of a traditional solid-hull craft. Our Zodiac boats have the same speed and maneuverability of a metal or fiberglass craft, but ride better on the waves and allow us to get closer to great snorkeling spots and marine life on our whale watching tours. The also feature rigid plates on the floor of the craft and a solid frame, so you’ll feel stable when riding on the boat as well as when you enter or exit the water.
We know this post may be more Zodiac boat information than some of you ever thought you needed, but since Maui Zodiac boat tours are our passion, we thought we’d share! Contact us with any questions about our boats, our snorkeling and whale watching tours or anything else. We’ll see you on the waves!
